Praise be to Allaah, we praise Him and seek His help and forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our evil deeds. Whomever Allaah guides none can lead astray and whomever Allaah leaves astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god except Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. O you who believe! Fear Allaah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam (as Muslims), with complete submission to Allaah [Aal Imraan 3:102].

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said, (Allah the Exalted said, “O Son of Adam! Busy yourself in worshiping Me, and I will fill your chest with riches and dissipate your meekness. Otherwise, I will fill your chest with distracting affairs and will not do away with your meekness.”) At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah collected this Hadith and At-Tirmidhi said, “Hasan Gharib.”-Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir of Surah Dhariyaat.

Television is one of the forms of Shaytaan – it is a social ill which people are unaware of. The amount of time some people spend watching television is worrying as time is precious and watching television is a distracting affair, nothing but idleness. Not only that, the nature of programmes shown on television go directly against the fundamentals of Islaam. Television causes couch potato obesity; it harms the IQ and also damages social relations. It is the work of Shaytaan which diverts the individual from his true purpose in life – to obey Allah Subhanahu wa-ta’ala.

Ibn Abbas narrated that Prophet Mohammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) health and free time for doing good.” (Bukhari 8/421)

How true these words are! One’s youth is spent in watching unnecessary programmes which are neither beneficial nor do they increase one in knowledge. The filth shown on television is pure evil; it seeps into the lives of the viewers and allows them to be immersed into a world where everything is legitimate. In a world, where there is no haya’a.

What is the real purpose in life?

I have only created Jinns and Men, that they may serve Me. No Sustenance do I require of them, nor do I require that they should feed Me. For Allah is He Who gives (all) Sustenance, Lord of Power, Steadfast (for ever). (Qur’an 51:56-58)

In the sublime words of our Creator, we have been created to worship Him and to seek His forgiveness. Is it even acceptable to own such a thing whereby one is distracted from his real goal? Endless hours are spent in being “entertained” by the Devil; one is hypnotised to the extent where one cannot wait for the next episode to start. How many prayers have been missed? How many hours are consumed by this dreaded evil? How many immodest, lewd, immoral scenes have been watched? How many times have the eyes committed zina?

By (the Token of) Time (through the ages), Verily Man is in loss, Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy. (Qur’an 103:1-3)

Muslims are commanded to do only that which will benefit their souls in the akhira. Each second gone by is valuable. Instead of watching television all night, our nights ought to be spent in sujood. They ought to be spent in reciting the Qur’an, pondering its meanings. They ought to be spent in crying for forgiveness, asking for His Mercy.

But celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and be of those who prostrate themselves in adoration. And serve thy Lord until there come unto thee the Hour that is certain (i.e., death). (Qur’an 15:98-99)

Fear Allah Subhanahu wa-ta’ala and worship Him as He ought to be worshipped, follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), for the Hour is near.

Narrated Abdullah Bin Mas`ud Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said:
“A man shall be asked concerning five things on the day of resurrection: concerning his life, how he spent it; concerning his youth, how he grew old; concerning his wealth, whence he acquired it, and in what way he spent it; and what was it that he did with the knowledge that he had.”

Finally – O Allaah, we ask You by Your beautiful Names and sublime Attributes to renew the faith in our hearts. O Allaah, make faith appear beautiful to us and adorn our hearts with it, and make kufr, sin and disobedience abhorrent to us. Make us of those who are rightly guided. Glorified be the Lord of Might above what they ascribe to Him. Peace be upon the Messengers and praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds.
